2014 review

The Year of Mercedes It was an interesting season in Formula 1. The Mercedes was dominant from the beginning until the end. But fortunately, the management of the team let the two drivers (Hamilton and Rosberg) battle for the title. So, speaking on behalf of all F1 fans - I believe - I would like to thank the German manufacturer which didn't give team orders as Ferrari used to do in the Schumacher era. In the following graph you can see how close the battle was... Apart from the drivers of the silver arrows, Ricciardo made a great season. He was the only one to win a Grand Prix, besides Hamilton and Rosberg. The smiling guy from Australia, won 3 times and finished third in the drivers' championship. Another good young driver, Bottas, shined this year. The Finn finished 6 times on the podium and claimed fourth place in the championship. Vettel was 5th overall, but the bad thing for him is that he didn't win any races. The last time that a champion couldn...

GP of Abu Dhabi

HAMILTON world champion for the 2nd time It was a bad race all the way for Rosberg. Although he had pole position, he didn't start good enough and Hamilton passed him. Then, a mechanical problem kept him from pushing the car to the limits and eventually finished without scoring any points. GP of Brazil

Rosberg is back After the winning spree of Hamilton, Rosberg made a solid performance this weekend and won almost everything. The German claimed his first victory since the German GP, back in July. Hamilton had to settle with second place (who also set the fastest lap of the race), but that's not too bad because he has 17 points more than Rosberg. So, if he finishes second at Abu Dhabi, he will be Champion. GP of USA

One race closer to the title After his tenth victory this year, Hamilton has gained a 24 point lead over Rosberg. That means he can finish second in the last two races and win the championship. Best of the rest was Ricciardo and the two Williams had another great result. GP of Russia

1st Constructors' Championship for Mercedes! Fourth victory in a row for Hamilton, at the very first GP of Russia. Rosberg, despite being forced to pit early and drive almost the whole race with the same set of tyres, finished second. That was the ninth 1-2 for Mercedes this year, which secured the 1st ever Constructors' Championship for the "Silver Arrows" Race Results 1 Hamilton Mercedes 2 Rosberg Mercedes 3 Bottas Williams 4 Button McLaren 5 Magnussen McLaren 6 Alonso Ferrari 7 Ricciardo Red Bull 8 Vettel Red Bull 9 Raikkonen Ferrari 10 Perez Force India Fastest men FP1 Rosberg FP2 Hamilton FP3 Hamilton QP Hamilton Race Bottas Standings after the race Drivers' Championship Pos Driver Points 1 Hamilton 291 2 Rosberg 274 3 Ricciardo 199 4 Bottas 145 5 Vettel 143 6 Alonso 141 7 Button 94 8 Hulkenberg 76 9 Massa 71...

GP of Japan

Dangerous race The race of Japan ended earlier, because of a horrible accident. Bianchi lost the control of his Marussia and crashed into a crane which was removing Sutil's car (who also had lost the control and crashed into the barriers). Unfortunately Bianchi was hurt so they had to take him to the hospital. At the time these lines were written no announcements were made about his health... GP of Singapore

50% success That was Hamilton's 7th victory, out of 14 races so far and that put him on top of the standings. Of course he took advantage of his team mate's DNF! Red Bull made a strong appearance with both cars finishing on the podium. Alonso, as always, got the best out of a bad car. On the other hand, Button failed to finish and Magnussen was just 10th and now McLaren has dropped behind Force India at the Constructors' Championship. GP of Italy

Mercedes POWER Hamilton won the italian grand prix despite his awful start. Rosberg finished second, but that is good enough for him, as he is still leading the championship by 22 points over Hamilton. We knew that Ferrari has a bad car this year, but their home race was the worst. Alonso retired in the middle of the race and Raikkonen was just ninth. On the contrary, the drivers of Williams did a great job, finishing 3rd and 4th and now the team stands in 3rd place at the Constructors' Championship, over Ferrari. Ricciardo shined again, when he brilliantly passed Perez and Vettel to claim 5th position. Kvyat made the move of the day, when he didn't brake for the first turn and drove sideways on the grass in order to control the car and to return to track. The drivers McLaren fought again with Force India's Perez for 7th place. Magnussen was given another penalty and Button failed to pass the Mexican. Hence, the two teams are now separated by 1 point (110 for McLare...

GP of Belgium - UPDATE

Apart from Mercedes, only Ricciardo Ricciardo won the 2nd race in a row. That was the Australian's third victory this year, while Vettel is struggling just to get on the podium. Rosberg hit Hamilton on the first lap, while trying to gain the first place he lost to his team mate. That resulted a damaged front wing for the German and a flat tyre for the Briton. Hamilton was forced to drive several kilometers with that puncture, until he reached the pits. After that, he was outpaced and finally retired a few laps before the end. That was not the only problem of Rosberg. At some point, a strange ribbon got stuck on his car, right in front of his face. But despite that, he managed to claim 2nd place. PS: Magnussen was given a 20 second penalty because of unfair driving. At the last stage of the race, the Danish was 5th and he was holding back 3 champions: Alonso, Button and Vettel. The Spaniard tried to pass him several times without success. But in one attempt, he w...

GP of Hungary

He who smiles last, smiles best! Daniel Ricciardo won the second GP of his career in front of Alonso and Hamilton. That was an eventful race. Hamilton despite having started from the pit lane, took advantage of the safety car and finished third. On the contrary, Rosberg started from pole and lost time at the first period of the safety car. After that and because of the pit stops, the German fell behind Hamilton but was faster than the Briton, who was ordered to let the championship leader to pass. The former champion didn't obey, which ruined Rosberg's race. The award of the best choreography goes to Vettel, who had a 360 degree spin at the long straight, touched the pit wall, but was able to carry on, of course a few places down. The surprise of the race was Raikkonen. The Finn started from far behind and finished sixth, which is his best result this year. GP of Germany

Victory on home soil, part 2 Rosberg took his revenge, by winning the German GP. His rival, Hamilton, after starting from 20th place because of an accident during Qualifying, finished third (!), minimizing the "damage". GP of Great Britain

Victory on home soil Hamilton won the British grand prix and closed the gap between him and Rosberg to just 4 points, despite having started from 6th place. The German driver had his first DNF of this season, due to a gearbox failure. The race stopped for about an hour, because Raikkonen lost control of his car on the first lap and hit the barrier, which had to be replaced. When the race restarted behind the pace car, Hamilton passed quite easily the two McLarens in front of him and started chasing his team mate. But he wasn't fast enough to catch up with him. Luck turned its back to Rosberg for the first time this year and the championship leader parked his single seater beside the track. Great performance by Bottas, who started from far behind (14th) and finished second, after passing several drivers. On the contrary, the other driver of Williams, Massa, was forced to retire after hitting the uncontrolled Ferrari of Raikkonen. Alonso, with the other Ferrari, managed...

GP of Canada

Finally some change Due to mechanical problems, Hamilton was forced to retire, Rosberg was out of pace and Ricciardo took advantage of that, winning his first ever grand prix in Formula 1! Hamilton started better than Rosberg, but the German managed to stay first. The two drivers were fighting on the limit when a mechanical problem occurred on both Mercedes. Hamilton eventually retired and Rosberg kept going, but was a bit slower. That's why Perez, Ricciardo, Vettel and storming Massa (who set the fastest lap of the race) caught up with him. Perez also had a problem (with brakes) and Ricciardo got past him. The Mexican lost another place to Vettel, while the Australian was already leading the race over Rosberg. And then some drama took place. At the first corner of the last lap, Massa didn't estimate correctly that Perez was braking earlier and hit him at full speed. Both cars end up on the wall, but fortunately no one was hurt. Close call for Vettel, who was lucky ...

Just Mercedes Another 1-2 victory for Mercedes, even at the GP of Monaco. It is very boring indeed! Fortunately there are no team orders, so we will have to wait to find out which driver will become champion. Magnificent result for Marussia. The legend of F1

It's been 20 years since the day a legend died. May 1st 1994, Ayrton Senna, one of the best drivers in F1 of his time (and of all times), lost his life when he drove straight into the wall, at the Grand Prix of San Marino, under unexplained conditions. Unfortunately during that weekend, he was not the only one to lose his life. Just one day earlier, the Austrian driver Ronald Ratzenberger also died in a car accident at the very same track... The death of the Brazilian 3 times champion caused sadness throughout the world. The football players of the national team of Brazil dedicated the world cup they won that summer to him. Since that day a lot has changed in Formula 1. The regulations have been altered many times and although modern cars are faster than those of the past, they are also safer. The driver is “hidden” in the cockpit, whereas 20 years ago he was exposed. Helmets now come with the HANS (Head And Neck Support) system. The crash tests are more strict. New tr...

GP of Cina

4x4 Fourth victory in a row and third double victory in a row. We all ready know the champions, but the question is which driver of Mercedes will conquer the title. Rosberg is still on top of the table with only one win and 3 second places. Hamilton, despite having won 3 races, is still in 2 nd because of the DNF in Australia. The first podium finish of Alonso helped his team climb to fourth place. Red Bull is also improving and Force India has constantly good results. This year, each driver has chosen his number and he will be using it for the rest of his F1 career. So the list is strangely sorted. Drivers of the same team are not necessarily in order. How Greek fans choose F1 teams

When Greeks start watching F1 there are several ways to choose which team or driver they prefer. Usually the choice depends on their favorite football club. Each football club in Greece has its “favorite number”, which is usually the number of the gate that the most dedicated fans of the team prefer when going to the stadium. There are 2 major football and basketball teams in Greece, Panathinaikos (which is my favorite) and Olympiakos (which has also participated in Superleague Formula). The jerseys of Panathinaikos are green and the “favorite number” of its fans is 13, whereas the players of Olympiakos wear red and the “favorite number” is 7. Because of the colors, most fans of Olympiakos support Ferrari in Formula 1, while the green fans usually prefer McLaren. But there are many exceptions, for example, some fans of Olympiakos are in favor of McLaren because the British team used to have red and white livery during the 80’s and early 90’s (just like their favorite football te...

2013 review (part 2)

Constructors' Championship If we could exclude Red Bull from the game, we would have enjoyed a nice battle between Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus. Unfortunately the Austrian team was far too good (they won 13 races, all with Vettel), so the rest of the grid fought for the second place. At the end, Mercedes claimed second place after changing places with Ferrari for a few times. The German team won 3 GP's, the last of them was at Hungary, before Vettel started his winning spree! The Scuderia only managed to win 2 races, while Lotus claimed victory at the first GP of the season. So if we take into account the victories each team scored, the final standings would be the same (at least for these 4 teams)! Fair result!
