Glorious days for Fernando Alonso who has done it again. The two-time F1 champion this time won the Rolex 24 at Daytona, driving a Cadillac DPi along with Kamui Kobayashi, Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande. The race was stopped due to bad weather conditions, but that doesn't reduce the Spaniard's feat. It seems that Alonso has found his motive for racing again, through endurance racing, as he has already won the 24hour Le Mans last year. Today one of the most famous and prestigious races in the world is getting under way, the Dakar Rally. It was originally called Paris - Dakar rally, because participants used to start from Paris and finish after several days in Dakar, from 1979 until 2007. But in 2008 extremists groups threatened to cause problems, so the rally was cancelled. Since 2009 the rally is being held in South America and it remains the toughest and most dangerous race on earth. Over the years many racers have lost their lives, usually riders. The rally has been held in several countries, including Argentina and Chile. For example last year it took place in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, while this year, it will take place in Peru only. It is the only race that so different vehicles take part, that is motorbikes, cars, trucks and quads.

In Greece, we are not very famous about our activity in motorsports. Although most of us tend to believe that we are something between Sebastian Loeb and Michael Schumacher, the truth is that we are as much relevant with motorsports, as the British with basketball... Nevertheless, we can be proud of the Acropolis rally. A race that was first organized back in 1951 and because of its success, it became international in 1953. Over the years, only in 1974 the rally was not held at all, whereas in 1995 it was not part of the World Rally Championship. After that break and a long period of it being in the WRC, in 2014 it was downgraded to the European Rally Championship (ERC). But still, it didn't lose all its glory. Unfortunately, the Greek Motorsports Federation recently announced that there will be no Acropolis rally next year, but hopefully it will return to the calendar of the 2020 ERC. The World Rally Championship was introduced in 1973, but for the first 4 seasons there was no driver's title, only constructor's. Through the years many great drivers emerged on one hand, while on the other hand a lot of manufacturers were involved.  The most successful manufacturer is Lancia with 10 titles (which holds the record for most consecutive championships, 6) and second comes Citroen with 8 titles, among 12 car manufacturers that have won a title. About the drivers, Kankkunen is considered one of the greatest, having won 4 titles and equally great driver is Makinen, who also won 4 titles, but he did it in a row. Μιας και είναι Αύγουστος και δεν υπάρχει δράση στη F1, ευκαιρία να πούμε και δυο λόγια για έναν άλλο φημισμένο αγώνα, το Pikes Peak International Hill Climp. Ή απλά Pikes Peak.  Πρόκειται για μία ανάβαση όπου ένα αγωνιστικό κάθε φορά τρέχει από τις παρυφές του λόφου μέχρι την κορυφή. Μοιάζει με είδικη διαδρομή των αγώνων ράλι, μόνο που το Pikes Peak είναι αυτόνομο, μία διαδρομή και τίποτα άλλο.  Η πρώτη ανάβαση διεξήχθη πριν από περίπου 100 χρόνια και ο δρόμος ήταν μέχρι και πριν από λιγα χρόνια χωμάτινος. Ένα από θρυλικά περάσματα ανήκει στον Ari Vatanen που οδήγησε με το Peugeot 405 T16 το 1988, το οποίο και κινηματογραφήθηκε και έγινε μία βραβευμένη ταινία μικρού μήκους. Το Goodwood είναι μία περιοχή στη Νότια Αγγλία, 100 περίπου χιλιόμετρα από το Λονδίνο. Εκεί, στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’90 ένας λόρδος αποφάσισε να μαζέψει διάφορα αυτοκίνητα αγώνων και να διοργανώσει ένα φεστιβάλ, το Festival of Speed ή FOS για συντομία. Η ιδέα του, άρεσε στον κόσμο και με τα χρόνια άρχισε να διευρύνεται, φτάνοντας από μία ημέρα να διεξάγεται επί 4 ημέρες! Ο σκοπός του φεστιβάλ είναι να απολαύσει ο κόσμος συγκεντρωμένα στο ίδιο μέρος αγωνιστικά αυτοκίνητα από διάφορες κατηγορίες. Έτσι μπορεί να δει από μονοθεσία της F 1 και αυτοκίνητα Ράλι (WRC), μέχρι αμερικάνικα NASCAR , γερμανικά DTM , αλλά και υπεραυτοκίνητα δρόμου. Επίσης δεν υπάρχει περιορισμός στην παλαιότητα, αφού στην επίδειξη συμμετέχουν αγωνιστικά προηγούμενων δεκαετιών, μέχρι και προπολεμικά! Πολλοί χαρακτηρίζουν το πρωτάθλημα της F 1 ως τσίρκο, συνεπώς το FOS θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι είναι σαν ένα λούνα παρκ. Ή ακόμα καλύτερα, το FOS για τον μηχανοκίνητο αθλητισμό είναι κάτι αντίστοιχο μ...

Μπορεί να έχει ξεχάσει πως είναι η νίκη σε αγώνα της Formula 1, αλλά ο Alonso κατάφερε να κερδίσει στις 24 ώρες Le Mans. Ο ισπανός πιλότος της F1, μαζί με άλλους 2 πρώην οδηγούς της F1, τον Sebastian Buemi και τον Kazuki Nakajima, οδήγησαν το Νο. 8 αγωνιστικό της Toyota στην πρώτη θέση.  Μάλιστα αυτή αποτελεί την πρώτη νίκη της ιαπωνικής εταιρείας στον θεσμό, ύστερα από προσπάθειες δεκαετιών! Βέβαια αυτή η νίκη δεν ήρθε τυχαία φέτος και μάλλον οφείλεται στην έλλειψη ανταγωνισμού, καθώς στον φετινό ξακουστό αγώνα αντοχής δεν συμμετείχαν οι κύριοι πρωταγωνιστές των προηγούμενων ετών: AUDI, Porsche και Peugeot...
