Rally Acropolis

In Greece, we are not very famous about our activity in motorsports. Although most of us tend to believe that we are something between Sebastian Loeb and Michael Schumacher, the truth is that we are as much relevant with motorsports, as the British with basketball... Nevertheless, we can be proud of the Acropolis rally. A race that was first organized back in 1951 and because of its success, it became international in 1953. Over the years, only in 1974 the rally was not held at all, whereas in 1995 it was not part of the World Rally Championship. After that break and a long period of it being in the WRC, in 2014 it was downgraded to the European Rally Championship (ERC). But still, it didn't lose all its glory. Unfortunately, the Greek Motorsports Federation recently announced that there will be no Acropolis rally next year, but hopefully it will return to the calendar of the 2020 ERC. It seems that within the vortex of the economic crisis, even that race was affected. Of cou...

2018 F1 review

Just a few days before the end of 2018, it's a good time to take a look back at what happened in the F1 championship. It was a season of 21 races, including the French Grand Prix, which was held at Paul Ricard. At the beginning of the season, Vettel made a perfect start, claiming victory at the first 2 races. Some bad results for the German and the fact that Ricciardo prevented him from winning at Monte Carlo (where passing is impossible), allowed Hamilton to stay close for the championship battle. The next missed opportunity for Vettel was at Austria, where his rival didn't score any points, but failed to win. In fact he finished third behind Verstappen and his teammate, with just one separating him from Hamilton. In the following race, the GP of Great Britain, Vettel got it right and finished in front of Hamilton. Hamilton, after losing in his home, took his revenge from Vettel and won at the Hockenheim, showing that apart from talent, one must also be lucky. The Ge...

Ad Diriyah ePrix

Da Costa won the first race of the season, in front of Vergne. The driver of BMW started the race from Pole Position, although he didn't place his car correctly on the grid. Vergne challenged the Portuguese until the end of the race and despite a drive through penalty, he took advantage of the safety car at the late stages, in order to climb back second. At the last lap, the driver of DS Techeetah, failed to overtake the leader, although he had succeeded twice earlier. Formula E

The 2018 Formula 1 Championship may have finished, but there is no reason to worry about, because the Formula E season has just started! Formula E is a series of 12 races, called e-Prix's, where electric single seaters take part. FIA launched this series in 2014 as an alternative of Formula 1 and not as a supporting championship. That means, drivers do not race in Formula E in order to take a promotion for Formula 1, but that the two championships are in an equally high level. Top car manufacturers have participated in the past, such as Renault, which has won the most races and titles, and AUDI. This year Renault will not participate and AUDI, the reigning champion, will have to compete against other famous constructors, such as BMW (which one the first ePrix of the season), Jaguar and Nissan. Motorsport giants, Mercedes and Porsche, are planning to participate in the next season. The chassis and the battery are the same for all 11 teams, while each team can create the...

WRC

The World Rally Championship was introduced in 1973, but for the first 4 seasons there was no driver's title, only constructor's. Through the years many great drivers emerged on one hand, while on the other hand a lot of manufacturers were involved.  The most successful manufacturer is Lancia with 10 titles (which holds the record for most consecutive championships, 6) and second comes Citroen with 8 titles, among 12 car manufacturers that have won a title. About the drivers, Kankkunen is considered one of the greatest, having won 4 titles and equally great driver is Makinen, who also won 4 titles, but he did it in a row. Other significant drivers are Rorhl, Vatanen, Blomqvist, Sainz, etc. Around 2000 the competition was very high, with Makinen, Gronholm, Burns, Solberg and McRae fighting for the crown. But all that changed, when Loeb started racing with Citroen, consisting of an invincible combination. From 2004 and on, the Frenchman razed the opponents and managed to ac...

Hamilton vs Vettel

Hamilton vs Vettel Lewis Hamilton won his 5th F1 title this year and is considered the best active driver in the grid. He holds several records, that even Michael Schumacher did not achieve, such as having won at least one GP in each season of his career! Of course, Sebastian Vettel is also a really good driver, but he has a big disadvantage: he has never won a race while having started from the 4th place or lower! It seems that for the German to win, his weekend should be going well enough to qualify 1st, 2nd or 3rd, in order to claim victory. If it happens to start the race from a bad place, he can't fight back... On the other side, Hamilton has finished 1st, although he started 4th, twice. One victory came after starting 5th and an other one after starting 6th. His best (and a bit lucky) performance, was at this year's German GP, where Hamilton started from just 14th place and managed to finish 1st. That race seemed to be going OK for Vettel, who had started from pol...
