Today one of the most famous and prestigious races in the world is getting under way, the Dakar Rally.
It was originally called Paris - Dakar rally, because participants used to start from Paris and finish after several days in Dakar, from 1979 until 2007. But in 2008 extremists groups threatened to cause problems, so the rally was cancelled. Since 2009 the rally is being held in South America and it remains the toughest and most dangerous race on earth. Over the years many racers have lost their lives, usually riders.
The rally has been held in several countries, including Argentina and Chile. For example last year it took place in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, while this year, it will take place in Peru only. It is the only race that so different vehicles take part, that is motorbikes, cars, trucks and quads.
