The new McLaren - Mercedes partnership

Image by MikesPhotos from Pixabay In 2014 the long lasting co-operation between McLaren and Mercedes came to an end. It had started back in 1996 and despite the almost 2 decades of partnership, the results were only one Constructors' championship (1998) and 3 Drivers' championships (1998, 1999, 2008). McLaren turned to a previous supplier, Honda, in an effort to revitalize the golden era of the late '80s, but the results proved to be far from. After 3 years with Honda engines (2015-17) the deal did not continue, without a single podium, not to mention victories or championships. After McLaren, Honda partnered with Red Bull with immediate good results, although failing to win championship, they won some races. Image by Hans Braxmeier from Pixabay Since last year, McLaren is powered by Renault. The French manufacturer has had a declining performance in recent years, and couldn't keep up with Mercedes and Ferrari when they were supplying Red Bull. With Fren

The Austrian starting grid Controversy

Controversy was created because of how the starting grid has shaped after the penalties that were given to Hamilton and Magnussen. FIA applies penalties in a peculiar way, resulting a paradox, although Hamilton was handed a 3 place penalty, he lost only two places in the starting grid. Those penalties should have been applied in chronological order , that is first 5 places for Magnussen for a mechanical change: and then 3 places for Hamilton for impending Raikkonen during Qualifying:

The Canada Conflict

Vettel in Canada made a mistake and got off the track. As he declared, he couldn't control the car in order to make a safe re-entry to the track, so he returned on the racing line, keeping Hamilton. For that move 5 seconds were added to his total time, pushing him from first to second place. He was complaining that there was nothing he could do. But there was. He could have let Hamilton pass and then fight for victory. Instead he kept the champion behind him, hoping that he would not get a penalty...

RIP Niki Lauda

ChineseGP

This time Hamilton was not lucky, he won fair and square. He started from second place, but at the first corner was already in front of his teammate and pole man, Bottas, who held back Vettel. After that, the champion never looked back and comfortably won the 1000th GP of F1! It was an uneventful race, apart from the incident of the first lap, involving Kvyat, Norris and Sainz. The Russian hit the two McLarens, forcing them to drop down to the last places, while he was penalized with a drive through. On the other hand, Ferrari for once again gave team team orders to Leclerc, forcing him to let Vettel pass and ruining his race. At the Scuderia they haven't realized that they have a better chance at the constructors' championship if they let Leclerc do his job. Before they even know, Mercedes has almost double points already... Race results: Driver Team 1 Hamilton Mercedes 2 Bottas Mercedes 3 Vettel Fer

BahrainGP

What a pitty for Leclerc! The young and super fast driver of Ferrari deserved the victory. And he would have won if it wasn't for the failure of his engine. At least he made it to the podium, avoiding losing another spot from Verstappen, due to the safety car that was deployed because both drivers of Renault were forced to park their cars aside, after mechanical failures. The weekend seemed ideal for Ferrari, the drivers were dominating the practice sessions and  started from the front row. Leclerc set the fastest time in Qualifying, thus claiming his first pole position. Vettel was second, but made a better start when the red lights turned off. But had a faster pace than the German and managed to pass him. Vettel couldn't keep up with his team mate and couldn't get away from Hamilton. The champion, after the pit stops, was very close to his opponent and passed him on the outside! Vettel's misfortune hit him again, while without any contact the car spun off. As if

WHAT A RACE! Wehrlein (Mahindra) made a good start from Pole Position. Nelson Piquet Jr. had a nasty crash early in the race, forcing the stewards to stop it. Werhlein was in first place in most of the time, but at the end his battery run out, allowing diGrassi (who was desperately trying to pass him) to claim victory on the finish line. The driver of Mahindra was also given a 5 second penalty for cutting a chicane at the last and thus ended in 6th place. Nevertheless, it was nail-biting last lap, with all drivers struggling with low batteries. Also, Massa scored his first 4 points of the season, by finishing 8th. The two-time F1 champion this time won the Rolex 24 at Daytona, driving a Cadillac DPi along with Kamui Kobayashi, Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande. The race was stopped due to bad weather conditions, but that doesn't reduce the Spaniard's feat. Dakar Rally

Today one of the most famous and prestigious races in the world is getting under way, the Dakar Rally. It was originally called Paris - Dakar rally, because participants used to start from Paris and finish after several days in Dakar, from 1979 until 2007. But in 2008 extremists groups threatened to cause problems, so the rally was cancelled. Since 2009 the rally is being held in South America and it remains the toughest and most dangerous race on earth. Over the years many racers have lost their lives, usually riders. The rally has been held in several countries, including Argentina and Chile. For example last year it took place in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, while this year, it will take place in Peru only. It is the only race that so different vehicles take part, that is motorbikes, cars, trucks and quads.
